Water relations and stamen abscission in cut flowers of selected Myrtaceae.

Selected members of the family Myrtaceae make useful cut flowers for use in corsage and bouquets when wilting and abscission of the typically numerous and delicate stamens can be minimized. Using individual cut flowers of field-grown Eucalyptus ficifolia (collected on February-March 1998), we studied the effects of holding solution pH, and sucrose and hydroxyquinoline citrate (HQC) concentrations on flower mass, water uptake and stamen wilting. Stamen wilting was inversely related to cymule mass and water uptake. A solution composed of 200 ppm HQC and 2% sucrose adjusted to pH 4 had the most favorable effect on the maintenance of water uptake and flower mass. This solution was used to hold E. ficifolia flowers for applications of ethephon and silver thiosulfate (STS). Treatment with ethephon at >10 ppm active ingredient damaged stamens, which wilted but did not abscise; STS did not prevent this damage occurring. Similar responses to holding solutions, ethephon and STS were obtained in complement

ary studies using cut three-flowered cymules of Metrosideros collina cv. Tahiti.
