Clementine cultivars Clemenules and Hernandina, mandarin cultivars Ortanique and Fortune, and orange cv. Navelina fruits stored in packinghouses in Valencia, Spain during January-April 2000 were affected by a soft, watery, colourless or very light brown decay. The incidence of decay was 5-12% in clementines and mandarins and 0.2-0.8% in oranges. The causal organism was identified as the yeast Issatchenkia orientalis (anamorph Candida krusei). In laboratory pathogenicity tests with oranges, clementines, mandarins, grapefruits and lemons stored at 24 deg C in a moist chamber, similar decay was observed on all fruits, but lemon fruits were most affected. This is the first report of decay in citrus caused by I. orientalis in Europe.
