E. grandiflorum (cv. Hei Hou) cut flower stems (40 cm) treated with an opening solution containing 0, 50, 100 or 150 mg Al2 (SO4)3 litre-1 immediately after cutting, were placed in chambers at 25 deg C with 70% RH. Al2 (SO4)3 at 150 mg/litre significantly increased vase life from 8 days (water controls) to 15 days. Fresh weights of treated flowers throughout the treatment, increased up to 8 days after treatment, then declined thereafter. Water loss from treated cut flowers was lower than that from water controls. Tight floral buds opened almost 100% during the vase period with Al2 (SO4)3, while few tight buds in water controls fully opened.
