Comparative evaluation of some methods of expression of sprouting capacity used to measure physiological age of seed potatoes (Solanum tuberosum).

Potatoes cv. Kufri Baha (short dormancy period) and Kufri Lalima (long dormancy) were stored at 4 or 12 deg C from 1 April to 4 October. At the lower storage temperature, sprouting capacity was maximum by 1 August, while at 12 deg the maximum capacity was reached about 30 days earlier. Sprouting capacity declined more rapidly in Kufri Bahar than in Kufri Lalima, which maintained good capacity until 6 August. It is concluded that at the normal planting date of October, tubers stored at 4 deg have already passed their optimum physiological age.
