Managing the quality chain in citrus fruit industry: a case study in Cukurova region of Turkey.

This paper addresses the need for managing the quality chain in the citrus fruit industry in Cukurova, Turkey. Data obtained from packing houses (n=16, 1998/99) reveal problems related to productivity, quality and profit. Results are discussed with regard to such issues as loss of quality and product; purchasing methods; deficiencies in producer-exporter relationships; difficulties in obtaining qualified staff; low level of capacity; grading and standardization problems; lack of quality control; and inadequate storage. Suggestions about necessary measures to increase productivity and profit are listed.
