'Chickasaw' blackberry: improved postharvest handling characteristics, larger fruit, and high yields.

Chickasaw was selected in 1988 from a seedling field at the University of Arkansas Fruit Substation at Clarksville. In yield trials at 3 sites in Arkansas in 1997-98, Chickasaw produced the highest numerical yields in all trials, although yields were statistically similar to those of Shawnee. Fruit weight is generally greater than that of Choctaw and Shawnee. Chickasaw flowers 1-3 days later than Choctaw and 4 days before Shawnee. Fruits are long, cylindrical, slightly flattened and glossy black. Average weight in 1998 was 11.4 g for primary fruits and 11.0 g for secondary fruits. Fruits are firmer than those of Shawnee and Choctaw, and for flavour Chickasaw was rated higher than Kiowa and Shawnee but lower than Choctaw. Canes of Chickasaw are thorny and similar in erectness to those of Choctaw.
