Fresh weight losses in red ginger [Alpinia purpurata (Vieill.) K. Schum.] under different storage conditions.

The effects of preservative (300 ppm citric acid, 90 ppm chlorine, 300 ppm citric acid + 90 ppm chlorine, Floralife, the antitranspirant Primafresh or water, applied by spraying on the inflorescence) and temperature (15 or 25 deg C) on changes in fresh weight of harvested A. purpurata flowers were evaluated. The flowers had an average shoot diameter at the cut end of 16.06 mm and a shoot length of 90 cm. The top leaf nearest the inflorescence was retained on one group and removed on the other group of flowers. The postharvest life of the inflorescence was considered ended when 1/3 of the bracts were withered and/or brown. The results showed that a weight loss of 17% indicated the end of vase life. Temperature was the most influential factor on weight loss in all solutions. The presence of leaves reduced the inflorescence vase life. At 25 deg C, inflorescence vase life was longest (11.5 days) and weight loss was smallest with Floralife, followed by the control and Primafresh (9.8 and 8.6 days vas

e life, respectively). At 15 deg C, inflorescence vase life was longest with Floralife (28 days), and shortest with the antitranspirant and citric acid. At 15 deg C, the presence or absence of leaves had no significant effect on weight loss, but at 25 deg C weight loss was lowest in the inflorescences without leaves.
