Effect of poultry manure and post-production application of fungicide on the shelf-life of onion cv. Bawku Red.

The potential of soil nutrient replenishment and fungicides for higher yields and prolongation of shelf-life of onions was evaluated. An experiment was conducted in Ghana in 1998-99 using the treatments: 3 t/ha poultry manure, 340 kg NPK (15-15-15)/ha and 1.5 t/ha poultry manure plus 100 kg NPK (15-15-15)/ha, and post-harvest application of 5 g/kg sulphur dust fumigation, 0.25% dithane M-45 and a control. A combination of poultry manure and NPK fertilizer gave the highest yield of 12.4 t/ha, although differences were not statistically significant. Weight loss in storage was high in bulbs from NPK fertilizer plots, regardless of fungicide treatment. Weight loss was least in bulbs from plots given poultry manure, especially when bulbs were fumigated with sulphur.
