This review summarizes the available knowledge about rose systematics, genetics and breeding, and proposes some perspectives focused on breeding. Information is presented under the following headings: systematics, including taxonomy of Rosa and horticultural classification; cytogenetics and genetics of Rosa, including genomic analysis and conventional genetic analysis; breeding objectives, including cut flowers and garden roses; breeding criteria and selection procedures, including selection for disease and pest resistance, prediction of flower productivity, prediction of postharvest longevity, predicting rootstock/cultivar compatibility, and adaptation; and breeding technology, including sexual reproduction (pollen and pollination, and seed maturation and germination), interspecific hybridization (ploidy level manipulation, embryo rescue and protoplast fusion), mutation breeding (radiation and chemical mutagens, and somaclonal variation) and biotechnology (molecular markers and genetic transfor
mation).
