Postharvest quality of "Piel de Sapo" melon, Imara genotype, under ambient conditions.

Netted melons (Imara hybrid) collected in Mossoro, Assu, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, at the commercial maturity stage were packed in boxes designed for the internal market (corrugated package with 13-kg capacity) and stored for 49 days at 27 to 38 deg C and 40% to 60% RH. Changes in pulp firmness, weight loss, external and internal appearance, titratable acidity, pH, soluble solids contents, total vitamin C [ascorbic acid] content and soluble sugars (reducing, non-reducing and total sugars) were evaluated during storage. Average pulp firmness and weight loss after storage were 19.68 N and 4.79%, respectively. Total titratable acidity and soluble solids, reducing sugars and vitamin C content decreased during storage and pH, weight loss and non-reducing and total sugars content increased during storage. Overall, fruit quality was good after 49 days' storage at room temperature.
