In trials near Lake Constance in southern Germany, the effects of tree age, N and Ca application and harvest date on development of flesh and core browning in Braeburn apples in various controlled atmosphere (CA) storage regimes were evaluated. Late harvesting, low Ca, high N and low tree age all increased fruit susceptibility to browning. The more extreme CA conditions (>1.5% CO2, <1.5% O2) also resulted in a higher incidence of browning.
