Mango (Mangifera indica) is the single most important tropical/subtropical fruit in the World, with World Production standing at 23.195 million tonnes in 1997. India produces the most mangoes with annual production of 12 million tonnes, followed by China (2.142 million tonnes), Mexico (1.5 million tonnes), and Thailand (1.35 million tonnes). In Asia the largest producers are India, China, Thailand and Pakistan (0.91 million tonnes), while in Oceania, Australia is the largest producer with 30 000 tonnes. The mango is grown across a large latitude range, under widely varied environments, soils and management conditions. This brings with it a range of special problems or challenges. These are discussed under the headings: plant improvement, tree size and crop control, crop production and modelling, plant protection, mechanical harvesting, postharvest handling and management, processing and partial processing, economics and farm management.
