Effects of dichlorprop and GA3 on storability of 'Tsugaru' apple fruits.

The effects of dichlorprop and GA3 [gibberellic acid] on the storage of Tsugaru apples at room temperature, 1 deg C or in a controlled atmosphere, were investigated. Fruits treated with dichlorprop alone lost their shelf life within 20 days at room temperature; the shelf lives of other treatments were maintained for up to 30 days. Weight loss and the incidence of storage disorders were more severe at room temperature, especially in fruits treated with dichlorprop. However, there were no significant differences between 1 deg C and CA storage treatments regarding weight loss and percentage of fruits with disorders. CO2 evolution from fruits was reduced when stored at 1 deg C or under CA conditions, and was little affected by preharvest treatments except dichlorprop alone. At room temperature, CO2 evolution of dichlorprop-treated fruits declined for 20 days, while others exhibited a climacteric-like peak at 25 days of storage. Ethylene evolution was increased by dichlorprop treatment. Preharvest ap

plication of dichlorprop enhanced the red colour of fruit skin during storage. Dichlorprop treatment stimulated the loss of fruit firmness and titratable acidity under all 3 storage conditions. Fruit sucrose content decreased during storage at room temperature, but was maintained in other storage treatments.
