In selected orchards in Bari province from 1996 to 1999, data were collected and analysed concerning the relationship between crop development phases, from bud swelling to fruit ripening of cultivars Moreau and Ferrovia, and weather patterns. Ferrovia proved less sensitive to weather conditions than Moreau. The principal parasites were Rhagoletis cerasi, controlled by Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki if infestation was not heavy, otherwise by trichlorfon and formothion; Monosteira unicostata, which in periods of prolonged drought led to an increase in twinned fruit and Armillaria mellea, which appeared in clusters and was best checked by new planting of uninfected plants. Considerable damage to the lower parts of trees was caused by frosts in late March and the second half of April. Hail damage amounted to only 10%. Water stress after harvest led to fruit twinning the following year; this shows the need to irrigate crops postharvest. Moreau proved more susceptible than Ferrovia to splitting
after rain. Heavy rain after fruit set in 1999, combined with high humidity led to fungal diseases, not usually a problem in the Bari area.
