Promotion of underutilized tropical fruit processing and its impact on world trade.

This paper focuses on seven tropical fruits which are presently underutilized, but which have potential in the world market. These are: aonla (Emblica officinalis); bael fruit (Aegle marmelos); jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus); jamun (Syzygium cuminii); karonda (Carissa caranda); kokum (Garcinia indica); and phalsa (Grewia subinaequalis). Medicinal and nutritional properties of these fruits and their medicinal and culinary uses are highlighted. It is concluded that a number of acceptable products can be prepared from these fruits. However, it is argued that most of these minor fruits are entirely unknown in the world market and need to be popularized.
