The efficacy of Pantoea agglomerans CPA-2 against some of the major postharvest pathogens of pear cv. Blanquilla (Rhizopus stolonifer, Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea) was investigated. Fruits were wounded and treated with Pantoea agglomerans prior to storage. Pathogen growth was inhibited and disease severity decreased by Pantoea agglomerans during cold storage in normal air or low-oxygen atmosphere. Pantoea agglomerans can grow actively under refrigeration and can rapidly colonize wounded fruits at high (20 deg C) or low (1 deg C) temperatures.
