Effect of nitrogen fertilizer and duration of post harvest period on sugar cane quality.

The effects of N at 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg/fed as ammonium nitrate and postharvest period (0, 48, 96, 144 and 192 h after harvest) on the quality of sugarcane cv. G.T. 54/9 were evaluated in a field experiment in Egypt, during the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons. N rates and their interaction with postharvest period had no significant effect on brix, sucrose, purity, reducing sugar, pol and recovery sugar percentages. Brix and purity percentages increased with increasing postharvest duration. Reducing sugar percentage significantly increased with postharvest durations of 96 and 48 h after harvest, in the first and second seasons, respectively. The highest pol and recovery sugar percentages were obtained at a postharvest period of 48 h after harvest.
