The effects of preharvest treatment with calcium chloride, applied singly or in combination with 2,4-D, gibberellic acid (GA) or benomyl, on the presence of lignin (associated with wound healing) in satsuma mandarin peel during the postharvest period were studied. The treatments were applied on fruits grown in Turkey during October and November 1998 prior to harvesting in November of the same year. Lignin concentration in wounds, detected based on the presence of red stains, was similar in the control (no treatment) and in the treatments consisting of calcium chloride + benomyl, calcium chloride + 2,4-D and calcium chloride + 22,4-D + benomyl. The most intense colour reaction was observed in the wounds of fruits treated with either calcium chloride, calcium chloride + 2,4-D or calcium chloride + GA.
