Effect of ethephon and silver thiosulphate on postharvest characteristics of inflorescences of several Lupinus species.

Racemes of L. cruickshankii [L. mutabilis], L. densiflorus, L. hartwegii, L. luteus, L. succulentus and L. havardi were placed in vases containing solutions of either ethephon (for 24-96 h), silver thiosulfate (STS; 40 mg/litre for 4 h), or ethephon and STS (ESTS). Vases were kept in a laboratory illuminated with 30 micro mol/m2/s at 22-25 deg C. Flower abscission (FA) and senescence (FS) were determined. Among the ethephon-treated species, FA after 72 h was highest in L. havardii (90 plus or minus 2.5%), while L. densiflorus and L. luteus did not exhibit FA. FS after 72 h was highest in L.hartwegii (76 plus or minus 3.0%) and L. densiflorus (75 plus or minus 3.4%). In the STS treatment, FS was highest in L. hartwegii (48 plus or minus 2.5%), while FA did not occur in any of the species. In the combined treatment, ESTS, there was no FA in any of the species, while FS in this treatment was highest in L. hartwegii(50 plus or minus 3.1%).
