To evaluate the effects of PVC film packaging on weight loss and on incidence of disease, sprouting and branch roots in carrots (Daucus carota L.), during post-harvest, roots of cv. Brasilia were washed, dried and packaged with PVC film (14 micro of thickness). The treatments were: sealed film, perforated film (five punctures of 5 mm of diameter) and control. The roots were stored at 24 plus or minus 4 deg C and 65 plus or minus 5% relative humidity during 16 days and the characteristics were evaluated at four, eight, twelve and sixteen days after storage. The experiment was in a completely randomized design with factorial scheme 3x4, and with five replications. The treatments with PVC film were efficient in preventing the excessive weight loss during the storage period, which was less than 10%, while roots without packaging, at the 4th day of storage presented weight loss around 24%. However, it resulted in high disease incidence, caused by fungi of genera Aspergillus and Fusarium, and the occurrence of sprouting and branch roots, limiting to eight days the storage period.
