The effect of various postharvest dip treatments and packaging materials (cartons or 200 gauge polyethylene bags) on the storage behaviour of guava cv. Sardan under ambient conditions was studied. Postharvest dip treatments included: control; 3, 6 and 9% waxol for 1 minute; 150 ppm NAA for 5 minutes; 15 ppm benzyladenine (BA) for 5 minutes; 1000 ppm CCC [chlormequat] for 5 minutes; 2000 ppm captan for 2 minutes; 1000 ppm sodium metabisulfite for 2 minutes; 1% calcium nitrate for 5 minutes; 2% calcium chloride for 5 minutes; and cold water (0-5 deg C) for 5 minutes. Wax emulsion was better than calcium compounds, plant growth regulator, fungicide and precooling treatments in improving the storage quality of guava. Fruits treated with 9% waxol showed increased shelf life under both packaging treatments. Acidity and total soluble solids were higher under the treatment with 6 and 9% waxol than the other treatments. Fruit chemical attributes were better under polyethylene packaging, but organoleptic traits were better under carton packaging.
