The domestic fat industry is concerned on the quality of its products and thus, forced to thoroughly evaluate the quality of the purchased raw materials. Thorough quality evaluation of rape seeds leads to the conclusion that the biggest decrease in its technological value is reported during cleaning, drying and storage of seeds. Rape seeds is a very difficult material for the postharvest processing due to its structure and chemical composition. Even small irregularities may considerably decrease the technological value of the seeds as well as the quality of the final products. In order to eliminate any prospective irregularities, 371 seed drying facilities were audited in Poland during the end of 2000 and beginning of 2001. During the audit, special attention was paid to the machines i.e. the year of production, types, technical condition, source of energy, use of heat exchanger, temperature during seeds drying and the ways of their registration. Rape seeds storage is the last element of the so called postharvest processing. The optimum conditions of humidity, temperature and storage life are very important as rape seeds are extremely susceptible to mould development, self-heating and seed lumping that might decrease the quality or even eliminate such seeds as raw material for the production of edible oils.
