To identify different losses caused by non-pathological problems, 868 boxes of pawpaws cv. Solo from Bahia and Espirito Santo, the main suppliers of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were collected at CEASA/RJ between May and December of 1998. The pawpaw fruit was chosen because of its importance for Rio de Janeiro's fruticulture its handling problems and its high level of non-pathological problems, which are limitation factors for quality and productivity. From each box, fruits with pathological and non-pathological lesions were separated for analysis. The non-pathological problems were analysed and classified according to the extent of the injury. The results indicated that the losses in 1998 were 11.93%, a total of 4720.1 tonnes and $3925.55 million, according to the market price. This work also verified that the dimensions of storage boxes are inadequate for these fruits.
