The effect of aluminium sulfate (0.5 mM), cobalt sulfate (0.5 mM), citric acid (1.0 mM), and 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS; 1.0 mM), alone or in combination, on S. canedensis [S. canadensis] flower stalks held in 2% sucrose solutions was studied. Flower stalks in sucrose solutions with 8-HQS, citric acid+8-HQS, and aluminium+8-HQS recorded the greatest water uptake. Solutions with 8-HQS allowed the maintenance of higher rates of fresh weight over a longer period than solutions without 8-HQS. All treatments significantly prolonged vase life, with citric acid+8-HQS giving the longest shelf life of 14.2 days.
