Potassium reduces the incidence of superficial rind-pitting (Nuxan) in 'Shamouti' orange.

The effects of orchard spray with Bonus-K (9%), waxing, storage at 5 deg C and their combinations on the incidence of superficial rind-pitting (SRP) in orange cv. Shamouti were investigated. Fruits suffering from SRP were found to have a lower rind potassium content than healthy fruits. Spraying the trees with 9% Bonus-K increased leaf potassium and reduced the incidence of SRP significantly. Storage at 5 deg C also restricted the development of SRP. A combination of preharvest Bonus-K spray with postharvest low temperature storage (5 deg C), gave the best results. Addition of Bonus-K (0.25%) to packinghouse wax also reduced the incidence of SRP. Treatment with ethylene at 7-8 micro litre/litre to identify orchards prone to SRP induced higher rates of SRP.
