To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying chilling injury in citrus fruits we have isolated, by differential screening of a cDNA library from Fortune flavedo, a number of cDNAs differentially expressed by low temperature. The 3c1 cDNA encoded a protein with shared sequence similarity to several proteins known or hypothesized to catalyse the transfer of an acyl group from an acyl-CoA substrate. The expression of this cDNA is fruit specific and in response to low temperature showed a different pattern in chilling-sensitive (Fortune and Navelate) and chilling-tolerant (Hernandina and Pinalate) citrus cultivars.
