Harrow Sweet pear: the appearance of brown heart. Postharvest behaviour.

The storage potential of cv. Harrow Sweet was investigated in France during 1997-99, especially its susceptibility to brown heart. Maturity at time of harvest is the single most important parameter. Pears must be picked at a penetrometer hardness value of 6.5-7 kg/0.5 cm2. Various factors influence the disease including large size, late harvest and delayed placement in cold storage. Geographic location may also be a contributing factor, but varies widely depending on the region and the orchard. The fruit can be stored 3 or even up to 4 months under favourable conditions. Storage at 18 deg C delayed ripening by 4-5 days.
