The effect of mulching on the postharvest quality of peaches cv. Chimarrita during cold storage (0 deg C and >90% RH) was studied. Treatments consisted of fruits harvested from orchards with mulching of oats (Avena sativa) and without mulching (traditional cultivation) at 3 stages of maturation. Evaluations of texture, total titratable acidity (TTA), total soluble solids (TSS), and sensorial analysis were performed during harvest and at 6, 12 and 18 days of storage, plus 3 days of marketing simulation. The fruits harvested from orchards with mulching presented a firmer texture than those harvested from orchards without mulching. The percentage of TSS and TTA was not significantly affected, maintaining a good ratio independent of soil management. The sensorial analysis showed that at the end of the storage period, the fruits harvested from orchards with soil management consisting of mulching had better appearance, marketable quality and taste, than those harvested from orchards without mulching.
