Mature, green tomato fruits were irradiated with UV-C light at various doses and artificially inoculated with Alternaria alternaria [A. alternata]. Results showed that the respiration rate and ethylene production of fruits irradiated with UV-C at 2.4-3.6 kJ m-2 were delayed by 1-3 days. At this radiation dose, the fruits also exhibited retarded ripening and colour development, and disease infection was reduced.
