A nursery comparison on the vase life of the rose 'First Red': effects of growth circumstances.

In many postharvest trials it has been shown that clear differences in vase life can occur between roses from different nurseries, when the same variety is cut at the same day. In order to find the factors which cause these differences, a nursery comparison has been carried out. On 35 different nurseries, growing 'First Red' data from the growth circumstances, greenhouse characteristics, handling and post-harvest treatment were collected. Loggers sampled data on temperature, relative humidity, light intensity and CO2 concentration during cultivation. After a six week logging period, 20 stems were harvested in the vicinity of the logger and vase life and bud opening were determined. Following the first six-week period a second six-week registration period and post-harvest trial was carried out. By using multi variation techniques like factor analysis and regression it was possible to analyse which of the pre- or post-harvest factors determine the differences of the vase life. For vase life the mean relative humidity in the greenhouse was the most important variable to explain the differences in length of vase life. The number of small shoots per square meter, present in the crop at the moment of cutting, also influenced the vase life. For bud opening it was not surprising to see that the ripeness of the flower bud was the main factor influencing flower development. Also a growth temperature below 19 deg C was beneficial to bud opening. By using regression techniques it was possible to quantify the effects of these variables on vase life and bud opening. Path analysis indicated which part of the differences in vase life and bud opening could be explained by the measured variables.
