Effect of grading on specific gravity basis on the shelf-life of guava (Psidium guajava L.) cv. L-49 during storage.

The quality of guava (cv. L-49) fruits graded based on specific gravity was evaluated. Fruits grouped according to specific gravity (<1.00, 1.00-1.02, and >1.02) were packed in corrugated fibre board boxes and stored under 34.7 deg C and 80% relative humidity. The highest weight loss (17.56%) on the 8th day of storage and the highest rotting percentage (68.17%) were recorded for fruits with a specific gravity of >1.02 Fruits with a specific gravity of <1.00 had the highest ripening percentage on the 4th day of storage (84.8%). The total soluble solid (TSS), total sugar, reducing sugar, and ascorbic acid contents were highest at the 2nd day of storage. Fruits with a specific gravity of 1.00-1.002 had the highest TSS content (10.6%). Total sugar (8.54%), reducing sugar (4.66%), and ascorbic acid (124.4 mg/100 g) contents were highest in fruits with a specific gravity of <1.00. The results suggest that guava fruits with a specific gravity of <1.0 are

suitable for storage.
