One hundred and six farmers in Shewa and Hararghe provinces in Ethiopia were interviewed. They find it difficult to use the chemicals suggested by the extension service for post-harvest pest control because these are often too expensive, not available or past their date. Instead, farmers use local plants as pesticides, although their actual effect is not proven. Farmers observed that certain varieties of maize and sorghum (the staple crops) and wheat seem to be more resistant than others to the major pests, but the agricultural research stations have not studied this issue or attempted to breed resistant varieties.
