Effectiveness of application of SmartFresh (1-MCP) in Packham's Triumph pears.

In experiments conducted in Chile in 2001, the effect was studied of 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene) applied at 125-500 ppb at harvest. Treated pears were stored at 0 deg C for 60-150 days. Evaluations were conducted after the maturation period at 20 deg . The effect of 1-MCP on maturation, development of physiological disorders and storage losses was monitored. 1-MCP was effective in delaying fruit ripening during conventional cold storage. Other positive effects were better preservation of firmness and the green colour of skin, reduced rate of surface scald and weight loss.
