Apple cv. Braeburn fruits were harvested in 1997 and 1998 at 3 different stages of maturity, i.e. one week before optimal harvest date (OHD), OHD, and one week after OHD. In 1997, fruits were picked on 30 September, 7 and 14 October. In 1998, the picking dates were 29 September, 6 and 13 October. Maturity was assessed by the STREIF's index. After harvest fruits of each stage of maturity (ca. 80 kg) were stored for approximately 7 months under different storage conditions. Storage trials were carried out in gas-tight containers with different combinations of O2 and CO2 and in normal atmosphere (NA) at 2 storage temperature (1 and 3 deg C). Results revealed that Braeburn seemed to have a relatively short useful picking period. As the parameter for optimal harvest date, the STREIF maturity index should range between 0.24 and 0.18. Early and late picked apples were more susceptible to 'Braeburn browning disorder'. To prevent abundant storage losses, Braeburn should not be stored for more than 5 months. The optimum conditions for storage of Braeburn seemed to be 1 deg C, 1.5% O2 and 1.0% CO2. Internal quality of Braeburn fruits decreased rapidly in NA both at 3 and 1 deg c, whereas fruits stored in CA with low O2 levels were in good condition after storage.
