Japanese plum cultivars Santa Rosa and Golden Japan harvested at 3 ripening stages, i.e. stage II (the commercial harvesting stage), and stages I and III (pre- and post-commercial harvesting stages, respectively), were treated with 1 or 10 ppm ethylene for 24 h and stored at 20 deg C during 8 days. Ethylene production was determined daily, and colour, firmness, acidity and soluble solid content after 3, 6 and 8 days of storage. Ethylene treatments accelerated the autocatalytic ethylene production in Santa Rosa at all 3 ripening stages. However, in Golden Japan, ethylene production was very low in all 3 ripening stages and not affected by ethylene treatments. The firmness changes that occur during post-harvest ripening were accelerated by ethylene treatment only in Santa Rosa, but the treatment accelerated the colour changes in both cultivars. Soluble solids content was higher in ethylene-treated Santa Rosa than in the controls, whereas no significant differences were found between the control and ethylene-treated Golden Japan fruits.
