Influence of 1-MCP on russet spotting in lettuce midribs.

The effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on midrib browning and russet spotting (RS) of lettuce was investigated. After treating the lettuce midribs with 0.1 micro litre 1-MCP/litre, midribs were connected to a flow-through system at 5 deg C and exposed to 10 micro litre ethylene/litre in humidified air for 2 or 3 weeks. In experiment 1, midribs were exposed to 1-MCP for 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 h at 5 and 20 deg C. In experiment 2, midribs were exposed to 1-MCP for 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 h at 5 deg C. Midrib browning developed only at 20 deg C and was unaffected by 1-MCP application. RS in the control was visible at day 3 of holding and increased marginally from day 7 through day 14 in all the treatments. At day 14, the control had the highest RS score of 3.6, which decreased with the increase in 1-MCP exposure. Temperature had no effect on the effectiveness of 1-MCP.
