Loss of postharvest quality in apples cv. Gala during refrigerated storage.

The quality of apples cv. Gala was evaluated during refrigerated storage, using 3 sizes of apples: 100, 130 and 200 apples/40 lb box. Apples were sampled every 2 weeks for 90, 144 and 211 days of storage at 0 deg C and 92% RH during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, respectively. Samples were tested for weight loss, fruit firmness, total soluble solids and titratable acidity. The best correlations with storage period were obtained for fruit firmness and titratable acidity. The smallest apples had the highest indices of lost quality, except for fruit firmness.
