Solar tunnel drying of mace.

Experiments were conducted on drying mace (Myristica fragrans), grown in different regions of Kerala, India, in an imported solar tunnel drier from Germany to improve its quality. The physical and chemical properties of mace after drying were analysed. The samples from Kerala have better quality than the commercial samples. Optimum conditions required for drying of mace were obtained. Solar tunnel dried samples qualified the ASTA cleanliness specifications. 29.18% by weight of oleoresin was retained in the dried samples. Moisture content of the dried samples ranged between 8.4 to 9.5% and the level of total ash was 2.34%. It is suggested that using the solar tunnel driers reduced the drying time.
