An experiment was conducted in Pantnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India, during 1997-98 to determine the effect of pulsing before storage on gladiola cv. Her Majesty storage life. Spikes were dipped in silver thiosulfate at 4 mM, 8-HQS (8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate) at 200 ppm and AgNO3 at 1000 ppm for 30 minutes followed by 2 h in 10 or 20% sucrose. Pulsing of gladiolus spikes with 20% sucrose in combination with 200 ppm 8-HQS of 1000 ppm AgNO3 before storage resulted in greater floret opening and size than those not pulsed. Pulsing of spikes with 20% sucrose in combination with 4 mM silver thiosulphate resulted in maximum floret longevity and vase life. A sucrose treatment alone was not effective. However, these three treatments with sucrose were at par and are recommended prior to shipping or storage of gladiolus for long periods.
