Literature concerning the avoidance and treatment of diseases in cold-stored oranges is reviewed. A difficult balancing act is required between preserving the appearance of the fruit and maintaining flavour and texture. Pre-harvest application of gibberellins is risky, because of natural production by the plant. Of critical importance is the careful harvesting under optimum conditions of temperature and humidity, while avoiding damage to orange skin. It is important to minimize the production of gaseous metabolites during storage, because these cause unpleasant after-taste. The importance for plant breeders of considering varietal reaction to cold storage is emphasized, and the reaction to cold storage of 4 new Tarocco oranges (Scire, Gallo 3, Meli and Vitale) is discussed.
