Effect of dim light irradiation on preservation of fresh lettuce.

Fresh lettuce was stored for approx equal to 120 h at 5 or 20 deg C under continuous illumination at 0 (darkness), 1.6, 3.4, 6.5, 13 or 19.7 micro mol m-2 second-1 photosynthetic photon flux. The light compensation point was approx equal to 3.4 micro mol m-2 second-1 at 5 deg C, approx equal to 19.7 micro mol m-2 second-1 at 20 deg C. The fresh weight of lettuce decreased due to the increased transpiration caused by the dim light. Further, the optimum dim light irradiation preserved or increased the chlorophyll content in lettuce leaf.
