Influence of overseas transportation under a ventilation regime on the quality of Valencia oranges.

Results are presented of a laboratory simulation to determine the effect of sea transport on the quality of Valencia oranges at their final destination. The fruits were harvested in Cuba in January (beginning of the harvesting season) and March (end of the season), packed in corrugated cardboard boxes and subjected to conventional postharvest treatment (washing, waxing etc). The fruits were then stored under ventilated conditions for 20 days (the equivalent of the duration of the journey on RO-30 or RO-60 ships from Havana to the Baltic Sea harbours). Overall, fruit quality at the end of the simulated transport period was satisfactory, with higher losses from the later harvested fruits.
