Potential of plants for protecting stored pulses from Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) infestation.

The potential of leaf or tuber extracts of 30 plants to protect pulses from attack by C. maculatus during postharvest storage was evaluated. Pulses were stored in gunny bags treated with 10% aqueous plant extract and kept in individual containers containing newly emerged adult C. maculatus. Results from the laboratory experiments show that storage of grain in gunny bags treated with aqueous extract of leaves of Melochia corchorifolia, Melia azadirachta [Azadirachta indica], Ocimum basilicum, Datura metel and tubers of Cyperus rotundus reduced the total number of eggs laid. The lowest number of eggs laid was recorded with Cyperus rotundus extract treatment at 30 days (38) and 60 days (125). Total adult emergence from different treatments showed significant reduction. The lowest adult emergence was recorded in Melia azadirachta (18 for 30 days; 74 for 60 days) and Cyperus rotundus (25 for 30 days; 73 for 60 days). Weight loss was also reduced in seeds protected with plant extracts, such as Melia azadirachta (1 for 30 days; 5 for 60 days) and Cyperus rotundus (3 for 30 days; 10 for 60 days), compared with the control. The ten effective plants were tested in the farmers field at Salem districts of Tamil Nadu, India [date not given]. It was noted that aqueous extracts of Melia azadirachta, Hyptis suaveolens and Cyperus rotundus showed promising results in terms of percentage of seed damage compared with the control and other plant extracts.
