The postharvest life of gladiolus (Gladiolus sp.) cv. American Beauty spikes dipped for 30 minutes in 4 mM silver thiosulfate, 200 ppm hydroxy quinoline sulfate or 1000 ppm silver nitrate followed by 20 h in 10 or 20% sucrose prior to storage at 4 deg C for 48 h, was studied. The greatest diameter of first (12.17 cm) and fifth (11.63 cm) florets was obtained with 1000 ppm silver nitrate+10% sucrose. Silver nitrate+20% sucrose gave the highest percentage of flowers (95.55%) and spike weight on the seventh (19.00% of the initial weight) and last day of experimentation (83.33%), and the lowest percentage of partially opened (2.22%) and unopened (2.22%) flowers. The longest floret life (5.93 and 5.83 days) and vase life (12 days) were obtained with 1000 ppm silver nitrate+20% or 10% sucrose. The greatest solution uptake was also observed in 1000 ppm+10 or 20% sucrose.
