Effects of packing and storage temperature on the maintenance of postharvest quality of peruvian carrots.

An experiment was conducted on Peruvian carrot (Arracacha xanthorriza [Arracacia xanthorrhiza]) cv. Amarela de Carandai to determine the effects of perforated and non-perforated plastic packing on the postharvest quality of roots stored under environmental (35 plus or minus 2 deg C) and refrigerated (5 plus or minus 2 deg C) conditions. The average mean loss of the roots during storage ranged from 7.70 to 19.10, 0.69-9.19, and 0.13-1.07 under environmental temperature and from 16.25 to 32.85, 2.40-5.50, and 0.05-0.46% under refrigeration for non-packaged roots, perforated, and non-perforated packages, respectively. Roots stored under environmental conditions for 4 days were found unmarketable. Similar observations were obtained from unpackaged and refrigerated roots after 42 days. Packing and refrigeration maintained crop quality until 112 days.
