Effects of benzyl adenine in the holding solution on the post harvest life of cut anthuriums.

The effects of holding solution containing benzyladenine in combination with sucrose and 8-HQ on the postharvest life of cut flowers of Anthurium cultivars Liver Red, Merengue and Casino were studied in terms of fresh weight, water relations, initiation of termination symptoms and total vase life. Treatments comprised: benzyladenine at 5, 10, 15 or 20 ppm; 8-HQ at 200 or 400 ppm; and sucrose at 4 or 6%. The treatments significantly influenced all the characters. Benzyladenine at 10 ppm in combination with 4% sucrose and 200 ppm 8-HQ recorded the maximum total vase life of 27.4 days over the control (16 days) in Liver Red. Merengue and Casino recorded a higher vase life of 37 days and 19.5 days, respectively, over the control (19.5 and 9.36 days) upon treatment with 15 ppm benzyladenine + 4% sucrose + 200 ppm 8-HQ.
