The effects of various concentrations of cobalt (0, 0.5 and 1.0 mM) and sucrose (0, 3, 5 and 7%) solutions and their combinations on the postharvest quality of gerbera cv. Sath Baba were evaluated. The fresh weight, water relations and vase life of flowers kept in the solutions varied significantly. The fresh weight showed an initial increase, reaching its peak on the 4th day of the experiment and then declined thereafter. Better water balance was maintained in cobalt-treated flowers. Sole treatment with cobalt and in combination with sucrose enhanced the water uptake of flower stalks of gerbera. The vase life of gerbera flowers was greatly enhanced by cobalt alone and in combination with sucrose. The increase in vase life was 120% when 1.0 mM cobalt was used and 92% when 1.0 mM cobalt was combined with 7% sucrose.
