Effect of packaging with lining materials on dendrobium orchid.

Spikes of Dendrobium cv. Sonia-17 were harvested at the optimum maturity stage and subjected to different packaging treatments, i.e. newspaper, low-gauge polyfilm, brown paper, cellophane paper, butter paper and corrugated thin sheet. After 48 h, the spikes were placed in 250-ml conical flasks containing distilled water. The results showed that spikes packed in low-gauge polyfilm recorded the highest values for all postharvest quality parameters, i.e. flower longevity (206.66% at days 12, 27 and 30), flower diameter (8.11 cm), percentage of bud opening at day 27 (66.66%), vase life (31.66 days), flower freshness (206.66 at days 15 and 27) and colour quality (55.56% colour fading).
