Effect of holding solutions on the post harvest characters of dendrobium.

An experiment was conducted during 2000/01, at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, to evaluate the effects of different holding solutions on the postharvest quality of Dendrobium cv. Sonia-17. The treatments comprised 25 ppm BA; 25 ppm BA+0.2% Bavistin [carbendazim]; 100 ppm 8-hydroquinone+2% sucrose; 1.0 mM silver thiosulfate (STS)+2% sucrose; 300 ppm NiCl2+2% sucrose; 100 ppm acetylsalicylic acid [aspirin]; 50% coconut water (CW); and distilled water (control). The treatment involving 100 ppm 8-hydroquinone+2% sucrose recorded the highest values for flower longevity, flower diameter, percentage of bud opening, vase life, flower freshness and colour quality.
