Inhibition of ripening of Prata-Ana banana by 1-methylcyclopropene.

In experiments conducted in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) was used at 0, 10, 30 and 90 p.p.b. to delay ripening of Prata-Ana banana and increase its shelf life. Fruits were harvested at maturation stage 1, corresponding to the unripe, classified as "extra" selected, treated with 0.14% 1-MCP powder and stored at room temperature (24 deg C, 78.5% RH). Fruits were evaluated on 0, 4, 8 and 12 day after treatment for colour, separation from the bunch, firmness, soluble solids content, titratable acidity and pH. Treatments with 30 and 90 p.p.b. 1-MCP delayed ripening by 4 and 8 days, respectively.
